

The
ruin stands beside a flower garden in one of Scotland's most picturesque
villages.
In the 12th century of the Anglo-Norman
family of de Vaux acquired the barony of Dirleton and they built the
original stone castle.
It
was one of the most formidable Scottish Castles of its time and was
believed to be impervious to stone throwing siege engines of the 13th
century.
Nevertheless
Bishop Anthony Bek of Durham successfully besieged the castle in 1298.
The English held it until 1311 when it was recovered by the army of
Robert The Bruce....
