Designed
by the celebrated Edwardian architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, as a small,
albeit dignified holiday home overlooking Muirfield Golf Course and
the Firth of Forth, Greywalls was built in 1901 and offers a picturesque
venue for an intimate and tranquil wedding.
The
warm, honey coloured stone from the Rattlebags Quarry was worked by
monks and the specially made pantiles for the roof came from Denmark.
This unusual crescent shaped house was always one of Lutyens' favourites.
The extensive walled gardens, with their magnificent views, are attributed
to the world renowned designer, Gertrude Jekyll. The rose garden, lavender
borders and holly hedges hiding secret enclaves, are maintained in all
their original glory to this day.
Greywalls
has been a family home for most of its history. Edward VII was a guest
before the Great War and since 1924 three generations of the same family
have owned and cared for this lovely Edwardian house.
In 1948 Colonel Weaver and his family restored, extended and converted
their home into one of the first country house hotels in the British
Isles.
Ros
and Giles Weaver, the present owners, took over the house in 1977 and
have further improved the comfort and facilities whilst preserving its
grace and character. They, like their family before them, have continued
to offer their guests traditional and caring hospitality.
The
style and comfort of Greywalls is, perhaps, best exemplified by the
quiet luxury of the panelled library; a large, peaceful room lined with
books, comfortably furnished and warmed by a log fire.
For
nearly half a century, Greywalls has enjoyed a reputation for the excellence
of its cuisine and service. The chefs, using only fresh produce from
local suppliers, cater for the hungry golfer and discerning gourmet
with equal aplomb, and the
team
of young, friendly staff are always on hand to provide discreet and
kindly service. In addition to the dining room, there are a further
two rooms suitable for private parties and small meetings. There are
several elegant drawing rooms, a small bar with an excellent stock of
fine malts and cognacs and a lovely sheltered terrace overlooking the
extensive rose garden.
The
character, comfort and graciousness of the main rooms is also reflected
in all twenty-two bedrooms. Each is decorated and furnished individually
with antiques. All have en-suite bathrooms and the other luxuries that
one expects of a superb country house hotel. Most enjoy uninterrupted
views - to one side, over Muirfield and the Firth of Forth - to the
other side, over the gardens and the gentle rolling farmland to the
Lammermuir Hills, immortalised in Donizetti's famous opera "Lucia di
Lammermoor".
The
hard tennis court, croquet lawn, gardens and terraces can be enjoyed
until nearly midnight at midsummer, such are the long evenings in this
part of the world.
Greywalls
offers you the best and most gracious of home comforts in the lovely
surroundings of this magical part of Scotland.
Nearby,
sandy beaches, beautiful and so often deserted, are a haven for a myriad
of seabirds, and the glorious scenery of East Lothian with its ancient
castles, abbeys, stately homes and picturesque fishing villages are
but a few minutes drive away along peaceful, winding country lanes.
The "Athens of the North" Edinburgh, with its history, pageantry and
excellent shopping is a mere 30 minutes away. Then there is golf - a
dozen courses, including several championship ones, are within a 20
minute drive of Greywalls, and the house itself overlooks the greens
of the 9th and 18th holes at Muirfield, one of the most famous golf
courses in the world.
Greywalls, located in this delightful yet undiscovered region of Scotland,
is the perfect haven for an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle
of today's pressured world.

"...Yvonne
was very easy to work with. And, if she managed to arrange everything
for us so wonderfully, with so little notice (and as you can probably
tell, we weren't the easiest couple to manage), I have every confidence
that she can arrange an ideal wedding for almost anyone!"
