dryburgh abbey in the scottish borders and sir walter scott

Two more great men lie entombed within the abbey, Sir Walter Scott of Abbotsford and Field Marshall Earl Haig of Bemersyde.

an awesome sulight shotBoth graves are in the north transept chapel, which have been appropriated by their respective families after Reformation.

It is ironic that Buchan and Scott should reside across the canons' choir from each other for Buchan had had the misfortune in his old age to be maligned by Sir Walter Scott, who succeeded in ruining his reputation.

The 'wizard of the North' was buried at Dryburgh by right of his ancestors, the Haliburtons of Newmains.

Robert Halyburton, granduncle to Sir Walter Scott, had sold the abbey following his bankruptcy and Scott himself wrote:

'we have nothing left of Dryburgh, although my father's paternal inheritance, but the right of stretching our bones where mine may perhaps be laid ere and eye but my own glances over these pages'.

Sir Walter Scott was laid to rest in what is called St. Mary's Aisle on 26th September 1832.

After the war he was granted the title of first earl of Bemersyde in memory of his ancestors, the Haigs, who originated from La Hague in Normandy and crossed to England in 1066 and settled at Bemersyde near Dryburgh as vassals of Hugh de Moreville - the founder of the abbey which brings the story of the abbey full circle……..

What do our clients say about their wedding day and Scottish Wedding Consultants?

"...Our wedding was really a "spur of the moment" decision. We only decided to get married in late November with hopes of getting married in December. Without Scottish Wedding Consultants, we would not have been able to put together the wedding of our dreams. Yvonne is an invaluable resource and truly made the whole process easier. This was a once in a lifetime experience!"
